It's early September and the fish are just starting to feel the effects of the first few cold snaps of the season. Typically in a lot of the southern fisheries we start to see our water levels start to fall as well triggering crawfish movements & some of the best jig fishing of the year! I'll go over some of my favorite places to target these fish as well as the "go-to" jig in my box.
In early September into October fishing can be all over the place. We often go from running deeper points, humps, and the typical "offshore" places straight to fishing in less than 3' of water. These areas can still produce but are often some of the most heavily pressured areas due to the rise in forward facing sonar popularity. What I start to look for are rocky areas closer to deeper (relative) water.
Some great starting spots to target are transitional areas such as bluff wall ends. These areas are often 45 degree banks ending at the mouth of a creek or pocket and can absolutely be loaded this time of the year. Position your boat out in deeper water, cast shallow, and work the ballistic jig out until you find the depth that most of the bass are using. Typically the clarity of the water will have an effect on this depth as well as temperature.
Other great transitional areas to target are small isolated rocky sections surrounded by "do nothing" banks. The areas where the rock and bare bottom meet are great starting spots. Personally I will target bare banks with docks and private boat ramps because these areas are usually surrounded by riprap or chunk rock and often are overlooked!
All of these areas I will target with the Angler Tungsten Ballistic Jig. We designed these jigs to fish through any type of cover with ease. Typically a ball head jig and wood do not go well together. During the development phase of this tungsten jig we made sure it was perfect for all applications. From the shaft length of the hook, the weed guard angle, the strand count of the weed guard, and hook eye placement were all tested time and time again before release. Give the Ballistic Jig a try this fall and i'll bet it quickly becomes one of your favorites!
